This position is in support of the Sleep Disorders lab with multiple clinical and technical responsibilities for conducting, scoring, reporting, and assuring high quality sleep studies. Duties include making appropriate and timely clinical evaluations to initiate and conduct positive airway pressure and oxygen titrations while providing supportive patient interaction and education with adult veteran patients. Additional primary duties include quality oversight, sleep equipment calibration and maintenance, and training/resource responsibilities for other sleep lab employees.

Basic Qualifications:
Current certification by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy Care as a Registered Respiratory Therapist and/or Certified Respiratory Therapist Technician and relevant work experience. Newly certified therapists or technicians may be appointed at the entry grades.
Basis of Rating (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's): On a separate sheet of paper, provide a written, detailed response to each of the KSAs. Failure to respond to rating factors will result in applicant not being referred for the position:
1. Ability to perform polysomnographic testing ranging from standard to advanced studies.
2. Ability to operate polysomnographic equipment, including EEG, EFGT, Pulse Oximetry, airflow monitors, strain gauges, CPAP and BiPAP.
3. Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and abnormal tracings and take appropriate corrective action.
4. Ability to review and score polysomnograms with respect to sleep stages.
5. Ability to use Windows-based computer operating systems associated with testing and scoring sleep studies.
6. Ability and experience working with difficult CPAP patients during the day to facilitate therapy and desensitization with CPAP.

Major Duties: Incumbent practices as an RN. ICU is the medical and coronary intensive care unit. Patient populations include, but are not limited to: cardiovascular disease, pulmonary and/or GI conditions. The RN is accountable when assigned as a primary nurse for a defined group of patients for the entire episode of care. As an associate nurse, the RN is accountable for defined groups of patients on their shifts. Based on education and experience, may be assigned responsibilities as preceptors, charge, nurse or unit shift leader.

In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration with the possession of a Certificate from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the US or in DC. The RN must maintain a current, full active an unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA.

Operates a super conductive magnetic resonance unit. Positions patient within the examining unit, monitors the patient. Independently performs standard examinations. Confers with radiologists to establish requirements for nonstandard examinations and determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness of scans, pulse sequences, etc. to satisfy the requirements. Programs technical factors. Monitors the examination by checking the results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer generated data and images. Records computer data on various mediums. Performs computer software diagnostic testing and makes minor adjustments to equipment when problems arise. Performs preventive maintenance as required. Assists manufacturer representatives and biomedical engineers in the calibration and trouble shooting of all equipment associated with the MRI Unit. Establishes and monitors quality control programs. Maintains inventory of lab, medical and computer supplies. Is trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and basic life support techniques. Assists in the development of training programs for MRI technologists and physicians in training, and general clinical employees. Participates in lectures and demonstrations. Assists in the clinical and didactic training of x-ray students. .
The half-time (.50 FTE) LPN position assists with the coordination of clinical care for patients referred to the Center for the evaluation of movement disorders. The PADRECC LPN functions as a liaison between the patients and program staff members, and has the primary responsibility for providing direct and indirect professional nursing care for movement disorder patients. The incumbent will assess patient and family needs, develops a plan of care, implement and evaluate the care delivered, working closely with all members of the interdisciplinary team. Accountable to the Director or designee of the Parkinson's Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center (PADRECC) Program.
