The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking an Audio Engineer

The Performing Arts Production Unit is looking to fill the positions of Audio Engineer. The Audio Engineer collaborates with existing staff, faculty, and students in the Department of Dance, Department of Theatre Arts, and the School of Music Opera program to implement live music and sound mixing along with emerging technologies in major productions. This includes Dance Gala, UI Dance Company (UIDC), Theatre Arts Mainstage, and Opera productions. In addition, this position will also support research, recording, and the integration of technologies in the classroom and other Performing Arts venues and labs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As directed by the Production Manager, install, and support live audio mixing hardware, software, and other related technologies in the major productions for each unit.
  • May support live audio projects such as graduate thesis concerts, second stage projects, or interdisciplinary productions as directed by the Production Manager in collaboration with the DEOs of Dance, Theatre, and Music.
  • Collaborates with staff within the production unit to ensure successful implementation of live music within theatrical productions and live performance.
  • Collaborates directly with faculty to support research and the implementation of leading technologies in live performance.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise students in the areas of live music and audio mixing for live performance.
  • Provides effective communication and timely updates on research and implementation progress for future productions.

Education Required:

A bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or fine arts discipline, or equivalent combination of related education and experience is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate and work effectively with diverse individuals in a diverse environment in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Demonstrated experience in mixing live musical theatre productions.
  • Working knowledge of scores.
  • Experience with Dante Controller.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with both professional digital and analog sound consoles.
  • Experience with music performance and recording software (i.e. ProTools, Logic, Adobe Audition, Mainstage, or Ableton).
  • Experience collaborating with musicians, conductors and/or music directors in a live event capacity.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with digital media in non-traditional platforms.
  • Experience with variety of microphones for live reinforcement and studio recording.
  • Experience working with students in a performing arts capacity, providing a training ground and opportunities for experiential learning.
