JOB DESCRIPTION

Who We Are:
  • The Providence Public School District (PPSD) serves approximately 22,000 students attending our 37 schools. PPSD employs more than 3,200 professionals who work in and provide support to our schools, which include 21 elementary schools, 7 middle schools, 9 high schools, and 2 public district charter schools. Of our employees, approximately 2,000 are educators, and more than 600 others directly support students and families in our schools.
  • Our schools are diverse learning communities. Approximately 68% of our students are Latinx, 15% Black, 6.5% White, 4% Asian, 5.5% Multi-racial, and 1% Native American. Approximately 31% of students are multilingual learners, and about 16% of students receive special education services. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak 55 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

Job Description
Under the direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, teaches and instructs students in academic subject matter, social, emotional, behavioral, and educational skill areas.
  • Plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students.
  • Provides an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student.
  • Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings.
  • Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.
  • Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.
  • Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices.
  • Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.

Additionally, teachers will:
  • Become members of a professional learning community where purposeful collaboration, flexibility, innovation, and shared decision-making are encouraged.
  • Participate in all district and school-based professional development inclusive of working with internal (coaches) and external (consultants) support.
  • Support and nurture the academic, social-emotional, and physical needs of all students.
  • Participate in building a coalition of parent, community, and business partners.
  • Engage in all district-driven curricular and other initiatives as defined by the Providence School Department.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
RIDE Requirements:
  • Elem. KG-6 or Elem. 1-6 with Bilingual Dual Language - Spanish or;
  • Elem. KG-6 or Elem. 1-6 with Any MS Content Area Ext. 5-8 with Bilingual Dual Language - Spanish.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES:
  • In conjunction with a dual language partner, creates both a classroom and a community environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives.
  • Becomes familiar with and uphold the principles of dual language instruction.
  • Participates in district and school-based professional development activities.
  • In collaboration with a dual language partner, plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to learn, observe, question, investigate, and develop into bilingual and bi-literate citizens.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • In collaboration with dual language partners, adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • With a dual language partner, plans instruction that systematically addresses language objectives and builds students' ability to transfer and build upon knowledge between both languages of instruction.
  • Develops and maintains positive and cooperative interactions and communications with parents, colleagues, and the community.
  • Functions and presents as a unified team together with a dual language partner when speaking on behalf of or problem-solving for a student with parents, administrators, SPED teams, other colleagues, or any other stakeholder.
  • Monitors and assesses student progress and discusses and analyzes assessment data with a dual language partner to adjust student instruction accordingly.
  • Makes recommendations about appropriate accommodations for all types of formal assessments.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment in the classroom.
  • Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS STANDARDS:
  • Fully certified as described above in "RIDE requirements" or willing to become fully certified including on an emergency basis if necessary (fully certified strongly preferred).
  • Understanding of and willingness to work within the framework of an Aligned Instruction System as described in Providence School Board policy NSBA/NEPN: IF (available under "Policies and Regs" at http://www1.providenceschools.org/pesb/.
  • You must complete the new hire compliance training before your first day of employment.
  • The selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check.
  • Excellent technology skills including
    • Familiarity with communication, presentation, and data management tools and applications in desktop, web-based, and mobile environments.
    • Willingness and ability to model information, communication, technology, and media literacy for students, colleagues, parents, and the community.
    • Willingness and ability to continuously develop and evolve new skills and support colleagues in the development of their skills.
