SUMMARY
:
Under the supervision of the Manager of the Interpreter Services program provides medical interpreting services for the Medical Center and its affiliates. Responsibilities include assessing the needs of Limited English Proficiency (LEP) speaking patients and providing assistance by interpreting procedures, consent forms and any other patient related information. Relays medical information between speaker and patient in compliance with Hospital procedures while adhering to the IMIA Code of Ethics and Standards or Practice.

Compliance Responsibilities;
  • Understands and adheres to North Shore Medical Centers’ (NSMC) compliance standards as they appear in Corporate Compliance Policies, Code of Conduct, and NSMC’s Policies.
  • Professional, Supervisory and Managerial Staff, keep abreast of all pertinent federal, state and NSMC regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Managerial Staff ensure that their staff are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.
Job Specific Responsibilities; (e.g. clerical, patient care, food service, supervisory, etc.)
  • Responds immediately to requests for an Interpreter (in the specific language) throughout the hospital and at any other affiliate: in-patients, emergency room, outpatient, surgery, invasive and non-invasive labs, etc., as direceted by the Desk Coordinator of the department.
  • Interprets and transmits, in understandable terms, complex medical information to the patient including interpretation of consent forms and any other type of patient related information.
  • Conveys valuable information back to the health care provider during an interpretation, including cultural meaning of gestures and mannerisms, and any non-verbal communication relevant to the interpretation.
  • Interprets any relevant concerns from family members of the patient to the health care provider and, at the same time, relays any information from the health care provider back to the family taking care not to violate patient confidentiality rules.
  • Interprets with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness in consecutive, simuntaneou,s and sight translation modes.
  • Assists physicians through procedures performed in which keeping the patient calm and well informed at all times is vital to the success of the procedure and the patient’s well-being (i.e. arteriograms, endoscopies, cystoscopies, pap smears, and other emergency or surgical procedures in which the patient’s understanding and cooperation is necessary.).
  • Completes assignments as requested/directed by the Desk Coordinator while maintaining approrpiate documenation.
  • Adheres to medical center policies and procedures.
  • Completes written reports/logs clearly, timely, legibly and enters appropriate information into the interpreter database.
  • Demonstrates productivity in terms of completing assignments.
  • Projects positive attitude about department and Hospital and offers services to ensure a positive patient experience.
  • Participates with on call coverage/schedule as needed.
  • Reports any down time to Desk Coordinator for re-assigment

Job Qualifications:

Skills:
  • Required: The ability to read and converse fluently in the appropriate language and in English. Extensive knowledge of interpreting techniques and strong bilingual, cross-cultural communication skills. Excellent knowledge and understanding of medical terminology as well as basic anatomy, physiology, and diagnostic procedures and treatment. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with physicians, patients, patient families, all levels of hospital staff and community representatives. Analytical skills needed to resolve minor conflicts encountered during translations. Deemed as a competent medical interpreter by the interpreter competency test given prior to hire.

Experience:
  • Required: A minimum of one year's experience in the provision of Interpreter Services is required

Education/Degree requirements:
  • Preferred: High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred.


Licensure, Certifications, or Registration:
  • Preferred: Certified Medical Interpreter (CMI) preferred
