**This onsite role is located at the Downtown Medical Center from 8am-430pm (M-F)**
The Interpreter conducts medical and general interpreting for patients and their families, physicians and the healthcare team at VCU Medical Center during consultations and diagnostic testing; medical procedures and operations; the consent process and educational forums as well as to assist the healthcare team in problem solving and complaint resolution related to the Limited English Proficient (LEP) population.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: N/A Experience REQUIRED: Fluency in English and a foreign language(s) both oral and written Experience with individuals from diverse cultures/socio-economic backgrounds Experience PREFERRED: Minimum of two (2) years of medical interpreting experience in a healthcare setting (e.g. hospital, physicians' office, outpatient clinic) Education/training REQUIRED: Interpretation: High School Diploma or equivalent A score of 80% or higher through the Cyracom Interpreter Skills Assessment or a similar interpreter assessment as approved by the Office of Language Services Standards of Practice set by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care should be demonstrated prior to any solo interpreting sessions 40 hour Medical Interpreter Competency Training (such as Bridging the Gap)must be completed within six (6) months of hire date Translation: High School Diploma or equivalent Must complete a Translation Assessment, scheduled by the Office of Language Services Education/training PREFERRED: Interpretation Bachelors Degree in a Foreign Language, Teaching/Translation or related field from a accredited program Successful completion of 40 hours of Medical Interpreter Competency Training Translation Bachelors Degree in a Foreign Language, Teaching/Translation or related field from an accredited program Independent action(s) required: Initiates and develops positive relationships with patients, visitors, healthcare providers, fellow interpreters and staff exhibiting respect, flexibility and cooperation at all times. Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication staff and LEP family as it relates to medical care. Displays a high level of customer service and a positive approach.
