Roles & Responsibilities:

The Spanish Medical Interpreter communicates information such as symptoms, medical history, and diagnosis between LEP (Limited English Proficient) patients and medical providers and clinical and non-clinical staff. Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts medical and general interpreting for staff, patients, and their families.
  • Assesses and monitors patients’ understanding of information conveyed.
  • Records and monitors interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards.
  • Communicates as clearly as possible for both the LEP patient and/or family member and the medical provider.
  • Conveys thoughts and feeling as accurately as possible and does not impose their ideas.
  • Relays information in an accurate and concise manner and does not omit, change, or add information.
  • Assists LEP in-patients and outpatients and/or family members throughout the medical center.
  • May be required to proofread, edit and/or translate written documents.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Requirements:

  • Minimum formal education requirement: Associate Degree from an accredited institution, preferably a Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Must be fluent in English and Spanish, both verbal and written.
  • Substantial knowledge of medical vocabulary in both languages.
  • Must be compassionate and understanding of the needs of the patients.
  • Certificate of completion of a medical interpreter training (a minimum of 40 hours).
  • 1-3 years interpreting experience in a hospital setting.
  • Certified at the time of hire with the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI), or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI).

Compensation

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $68,437.43 - $70,490.55 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
