Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and/or step at appointment. A reasonable estimate for this position is $64,329-$91,718.
Percent time: Positions range from 33% to 100% each semester.
Anticipated start: Positions usually start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester). Summer appointments begin in late May and run into early August. Typically, the Department reviews applications for summer and fall teaching in February-April, and applications for spring teaching in October/November. Applicants are considered for positions as needs arise; the existence of this pool does not guarantee that a position is available.
Position duration: Semester or full academic year (2 semesters).

Position description
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at UC Berkeley seeks applications for a pool of qualified lecturers to teach Portuguese courses in any of the possible areas:
Portuguese language courses
Upper-division Portuguese literature and culture courses (upper-division)
In addition to instruction, general duties include holding office hours, developing syllabi and assignments, writing and grading exams, and grading and commenting on papers. Other duties may be assigned by the Chair as necessary.
UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
The number of positions varies from semester to semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Completed master's degree (or equivalent international degree).
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by start date of the position. The Department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
Preferred qualifications
Native or near-native fluency in Portuguese and English.
College level teaching experience in the U.S.
For language instruction: Demonstrated excellence in teaching, familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using current communicative language-teaching methodologies.
For literature/culture instruction: Demonstrated expertise and relevant teaching experience in Lusophone literature and culture, with possible emphasis on cultural production from Brazil, Portugal or Luso-Africa, including literature and cinema.
