Description

The Virginia Commonwealth University College of Humanities and Sciences is recruiting adjunct faculty for the Fall 2023 semester within the Spanish Program of the School of World Studies. The program is specifically looking for one instructor to teach Spanish 101, Beginning Spanish I, and Spanish 102, Beginning Spanish II.

Your application will remain active for a year; you may resubmit your application for subsequent years. Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. NOTE: This is a part-time, non-benefited faculty position. Adjunct contracts are for one semester.

Position Responsibilities:

The course time for Fall 2023 for Spanish 101 must be Monday, Wednesday, Friday 11:00 am to 11:50 am. The course time for Spanish 102 must be Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00 am to 10:50am. The course modalities are flexible according to instructor preference; this can be fully online or a mixed hybrid model with in-person components.

Course descriptions:
SPAN 101; 3 lecture hours (delivered online, face-to-face or hybrid). 3 credits. Enrollment requires any student with previous exposure to Spanish to take the placement test to determine eligibility. For students with no prior knowledge of Spanish. Beginning grammar, reading, writing and oral skills.

SPAN102; 3 lecture hours (delivered online, face-to-face or hybrid). 3 credits. Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or a satisfactory score on the VCU Language Placement Test within the one-year period immediately preceding the beginning of the course. Continuation of beginning grammar, reading, writing and oral skills.

Duties Include:
Instruct students in Spanish classes.
Meet all designated course instruction guidelines, including course preparation, assessments, grading, records management and submission of the course syllabus.
Grade assignments and exams in a timely manner based on instructions/rubric provided.
Respond to student inquiries within 24 hours.
Submit final grades according to College/Department policy.

Required Qualifications:

EDUCATION: Master’s degree in Spanish language, History, Literature or related field.

COMPETENCIES/EXPERIENCE: Fluency in the Spanish language. Demonstrated teaching experience at the university level. Demonstrated ability to use modern instructional technology. Demonstrated experience teaching in online formats. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in a field related to the Spanish language.
