Position Highlights

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Humanities at the University of Arizona seeks to fill a career-track position in Spanish with a specialization in Translation and Interpretation (non-tenure eligible) to begin August 2023. We offer an undergraduate major concentration in Translation and Interpretation. A Ph.D. in Translation Studies (Spanish-English), Spanish, or a related field is required at the time of appointment. Experience in the development of translation curricula for an online environment and professional expertise or certification in translation and interpretation (connected healthcare and/or legal fields) are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and growing our Translation and Interpretation Program and collaborate with the University of Arizona National Center for Interpretation (NCI). They will also contribute to university initiatives focused on fostering diversity and inclusive excellence, enhancing student engagement, and mentoring students, including those from underrepresented communities.

This is not a remote position. As such, the successful candidate will be expected to work at the Main Campus in Tucson, AZ.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach a maximum of six courses a year (three per semester) at the undergraduate level
  • Contribute to curriculum development
  • Actively participate in efforts to recruit undergraduate majors and minors
  • Contribute to departmental, college, and university service and outreach efforts
  • Candidates will teach online and in-person courses as needed
  • Train and mentor new instructors and teaching assistants, and conduct professional development workshops
  • Participate in Departmental and College-wide activities such as Convocation, Welcome Back receptions, Homecoming, Commencement, Tucson Humanities Festival and support the mission and purpose of a Hispanic Serving Institution

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Professional expertise in healthcare and/or legal translation and interpretation
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and ability to mentor first-generation and heritage language learners
  • Demonstrated experience in online asynchronous teaching
  • Superior communication and collaboration skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in Spanish or a related field at time of appointment
  • Demonstrated experience in online teaching and program and curriculum development at the college level
  • Demonstrated experience teaching in translation and interpretation
  • Demonstrated strategy with student recruitment and retention of majors and minors
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated record of sustained engagement in professional development in best practices in translation and interpreting
  • Professional experience and certification in healthcare and/or legal translation and interpretation
  • Experience teaching courses in translation and Interpretation
  • Experience in curriculum development for online teaching
  • Experience in innovating online college teaching.
