ELEMENTARY DUAL IMMERSION TEACHER - SPANISH INSTRUCTION

MUNGER MOUNTAIN ELEMENTARY

187 DAY CONTRACT

2023-2024 School Year, Approximately 8/25/23-6/14/24; Summer training/development may be required depending on placement.

JOB GOAL:

To provide culturally embedded, student-centered, thematically-based, and literature-rich instruction in the elementary classroom that meets district standards and benchmarks. Said instruction should focus on engaging students in concept/theme-based, meaningful activities to ensure they master oral language proficiency and biliteracy in Spanish and English. This position will act as the Spanish-side teacher in a Spanish/English teaching team.

Building Administration

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan lessons for daily instruction that derive from district standards and benchmarks and dual immersion curriculum.
  • Assist in the development of curriculum for the dual immersion program, particularly the thematic or concept-based units that are congruent with and supportive of the regular elementary curriculum in all content areas.
  • Align educational experiences in the classroom that reflect the philosophy and expectations of the dual immersion program.
  • Conduct 98-100% of instruction in Spanish.
  • Co-plan with partner teacher daily to ensure program cohesion and student success.
  • Structure activities in the classroom to encourage students to engage in both language input and output, to facilitate oral language production and comprehension.
  • Avoid any use of translation to facilitate comprehension; rather, the teacher shall use context clues, manipulatives, visuals, and student-centered instruction to facilitate comprehension.
  • Effectively differentiate both content and language learning to ensure that all students successfully meet program benchmarks and outcomes.
  • Assess student progress in a formative manner in oral and written language development, and adjust instruction according to the results of those assessments.
  • Use a variety of strategies to maintain frequent and regular contact with parents.
  • Choose songs, games, stories, and rhymes that are authentic and representative of various Latino/Hispanic cultures, rather than translations.
  • Seek frequent opportunities for professional and language development.
  • Work proactively to promote and support second language learning and bi-literacy throughout the school and district.

QUALIFICATIONS AND ABILITIES:

Minimum

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Ability to teach grade level content in Spanish and English
  • Advanced-Mid on all four domains of ACTFL proficiency scale - documentation may be required for employment
  • All abilities of a “good” teacher: excellent classroom management, sound instructional practice, ability to communicate effectively with parent(s) and other school personnel, etc.
  • Ability to differentiate for learners at different academic and language levels
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively in a teaming situation
  • Understanding of dual immersion programming and research
  • Strong advocate for program philosophy
  • Strong knowledge of Spanish literacy development

Desired

  • Native or native-like Spanish-speaker
  • At least three years demonstrated excellence in elementary classroom instruction
  • Extremely proficient in sheltered instruction
  • Cultural knowledge and ability to develop cross-cultural competencies
  • Strong ability to develop meaningful, relevant curriculum
  • ESL/Bilingual endorsement or relevant teaching experience
  • Reading endorsement or significant training in literacy development.
  • Experience teaching in a dual immersion program

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Elementary Education preferred
  • Wyoming teacher certification with an Elementary Education K-6, Dual Immersion K-12, required. (Applicants must be able to obtain a teaching certificate issued by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board (http://wyomingptsb.com/)

The School District places employees on salary schedules on the basis of:

Wyoming experience.

Out-of-state experience up to 7 years.

Degree – Bachelor's, Masters, or Doctorate.

Semester Graduate Credits beyond Degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person, may need to lift arms to write on chalk or marking board and occasionally stoop, kneel, crouch and reach 0 - 24 inches and up to 36 inches above the head. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material,the ability to adjust focus, and exposure to screen(s) via technology. Hearing ability to monitor activity and presence of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. Duties are typically performed indoors and occasionally outdoors, such as playground duty or when students are boarding or unloading buses. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free, clean, and healthy environment.
