This position begins January 8, 2024.
Guitar class: Teach a beginning guitar class of 26 students following a method book. Candidate should be able to read music, play chords, play melodic lines, be able to model both, model proper technique and posture, and be able to identify errors made by students to offer constructive feedback. Candidate must display creativity in programming music to be culturally responsive to the diverse student population, representing many cultures while also teaching about American music styles and traditional repertoire.
Latin Band: Teach a small class of Spanish-speaking students to play songs that are collectively chosen, while working on developing skills, including reading music. Music will have to be transcribed by the candidate as some students play with sheet music and others by ear. Candidate must be able to teach music in Spanish. The position includes a stipend for bilingual teachers (who must pass the BCLAD exam).
Beginning Band: Teach a beginning band class of 35 students following a method book, with the goal of playing grade 0.5 literature by the end of the school year. Candidate must be able to read music and play all the instruments in the beginning band in order to model for students, including knowing the transposition of all instruments. Candidate must display creativity in programming music to be culturally responsive to the diverse student population, representing many cultures while also teaching about American music styles and traditional repertoire.
Advanced Band: Teach students in their 2nd or more years of playing instruments to play music in public settings including sporting events, parades, community events, school pep rallies and other events, and concerts. Candidate must have experience in marching band, pep band, and concert band. Collaboration with middle school music teachers to recruit students for Advanced Band is a must. Candidate must have strong communication skills in English in order to represent Fremont HS, OUSD, and the City of Oakland in any events with a media presence. Candidate must display creativity in programming music to be culturally responsive to the diverse student population, representing many cultures while also teaching about American music styles and traditional repertoire.

Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree, must be eligible for employment in the US and pass a criminal background check. Candidates must possess, or be willing to earn, a California teaching credential authorizing instruction in core curriculum.
