The department of World Languages and Cultures at Marist College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish with a specialization in contemporary Latin American/Latinx literature and cultures to begin in August 2024. Teaching responsibilities include all levels of Spanish language, survey courses in literature, and a senior seminar. Candidates with experience or strong interest in community-based learning projects are especially welcome. The candidate should have proven ability to integrate technology into instruction and be open to a variety of course delivery methods (e.g. online or hybrid). The successful candidate will contribute to our programs in Latin American & Caribbean Studies, Global Studies, and First Year Seminar.

This position is part of an ongoing Diversity and Global Studies cluster hire, and we will welcome additional new faculty members as part of our Global Studies cluster. These new faculty members will join faculty in the departments of English, history, world languages and cultures, and political science who focus on Global Studies generally, and Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies specifically. The position is also part of a major college-wide hiring initiative with the goal of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution.


Minimum Qualifications:


A Ph.D. in Spanish or related field is required. Teaching experience and evidence of teaching effectiveness is required.


Essential Functions:


The teaching load will be 3-4, however, faculty who achieve and maintain an outstanding record of scholarship maybe eligible for a 3-3 teaching load. In addition to teaching and research responsibilities, faculty participate regularly in service activities for our students, Marist College, and the community.

    • College pays 100% tuition only.
    • Eligible dependents may be Reimbursed up to $2,000 per semester towards tuition at another accredited institution.

About the Department/School:


The department of World Languages and Cultures includes 5 faculty and offers majors Spanish, French, and Italian, in addition to courses at various levels in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian, and Latin. Students in our major programs are usually double majors in Teacher Education, Business, Fashion, History, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, and Biomedical Sciences, among others. The department hosts the Weiss Language Center, a multimedia tech classroom and student support center. Faculty in the department work very closely with Marist Abroad to support Marist programs at Florence and Madrid, as well as with the Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership in community-based learning projects in the Hudson Valley. The department is housed within the School of Liberal Arts along with departments in English, History, Philosophy, and Political Science.
